Welcome to HakodateHakodate, a popular tourist town in Japan, is located in the southern part of Hokkaido. Hakodate, a city with an exotic atmosphereWith the opening of the Hakodate port to foreign trade in 1859, Western culture started to flow into Hokkaido. Since then Western style and Japanese style have fused together in Hakodate. 1) Western culture and Japanese cultureLots of classic Western architecture constructed around the 19th century remain in Hakodate. On the other hand, the area of hot spring is located in the Yunokawa district, which is a 15 minutes' car ride from downtown. ![]() 2) Western history and Japanese history Churches in the Motomachi district enhance the exotic atmosphere. Missionaries came to Hakodate and built the foundations of religions in mid 1800s. Trappistine Monastery established in 1898 is located near the Hakodate airport. Meanwhile, Goryokaku Park located in the east of downtown used to be a fort, which was constructed with European architectural technique. The star-shaped fort turned into a battlefield in the past. ![]() 3) Western food and Japanese food Western food became popular in Hakodate after the opening of the Hakodate port. Many restaurants have served Western dishes by using fresh foodstuffs since then. Genuine Japanese food is also famous. At the Asaichi market near the JR Hakodate station, typical Japanese foods such as sashimi are served in the casual style. ![]() Hakodate, a city with scenic beautyHakodate is a port city extending at the foot of Mt. Hakodate with a height of 334m. Therefore there are many slopes offering beautiful ocean views. Moreover, a night view from the top of Mt. Hakodate is so splendid that it is likened to myriads of jewels. ![]() Venue of Tutorial & ColloquiumTutorial & Colloquium is scheduled to be held at Sun Refre Hakodate in the downtown area.
